Imagine a world where drones are not just tools but trusted partners in safeguarding our communities and infrastructure. The Association for Uncrewed Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) is making this vision a reality through its Green UAS certification program, which has recently added four advanced platforms to its lineup: Ascent AeroSystems’ Spirit, AgEagle’s eBee TAC, and Inspired Flight’s IF1200A and IF800 Tomcat.
The Green UAS program ensures drones meet strict cybersecurity and NDAA compliance standards. It builds on the success of the Defense Innovation Unit’s (DIU) Blue UAS program and extends these principles to broader, non-Department of Defense applications. David Michelson, DIU’s Autonomy Portfolio Director, noted that AUVSI’s framework mirrors DIU’s approach, offering the same level of trust to the commercial sector.
The certification process is thorough and involves evaluating the security of products and components. It also includes continuous monitoring of supply chain risks. This ensures federal, state, and local agencies, along with other security-sensitive users, can access NDAA-compliant drone technology with confidence. Casie Ocaña, AUVSI’s Trusted Programs Director, stated that the newly certified platforms expand procurement options while offering assurance for critical missions.
Each of the certified platforms brings unique capabilities to the table:
- Ascent AeroSystems’ Spirit: Renowned for its cylindrical design, the Spirit is rugged and versatile, ideal for public safety operations and industrial inspections. Peter Fuchs, CEO of Ascent AeroSystems, expressed pride in achieving Green UAS certification, highlighting the company’s commitment to cybersecurity and performance excellence.
- AgEagle’s eBee TAC: A fixed-wing drone designed for tactical mapping and surveying. It delivers high-precision data collection, even in challenging environments. Bill Irby, CEO of AgEagle, shared that working with AUVSI was an honor and recognized the certification’s value to the community.
- Inspired Flight’s IF1200A and IF800 Tomcat: These heavy-lift drones are designed for complex industrial tasks, offering reliability and adaptability for demanding operations. Rick Stollmeyer, CEO of Inspired Flight, praised the Green UAS program for its role in providing certification for NDAA compliance and security.
The Green UAS initiative is a key step in closing security gaps in drone operations. It increases access to secure, vetted drones for critical tasks and strengthens trust in the growing drone industry. By ensuring compliance and security, AUVSI helps agencies confidently deploy drones for public safety, infrastructure management, and more. This focus on safety and efficiency guarantees a brighter future for operations.
